The Career Development Applications include 17 days of lesson plans designed to support self-discovery (aspects of self-reliance to college and career planning), exploration of postsecondary education and career options, and the development of an individual College and Career Ready Plan that is informed by that self-discovery and exploration. The broad goal of these 17 days is to help students begin to "figure out who they are while they decide what they want to become."
CD #1 Aspirations
Today’s application focuses on learning more about yourself. Specifically, today’s CDA is an exercise to help you think about your hopes and dreams for the future – in other words, your aspirations. Today, you will be responsible for producing some type of illustration to reflect how you imagine your future. You can use photos or other images and graphics and words within any kind of document or slideshow (→low tech: a piece of paper with pictures, or images from magazines, etc. and written words high tech: using mobile devices to take photos or download images from the web, and dropping those into a word or PowerPoint file.

CD #2 Reality Check
Students use Reality Check in order to discover financial costs associated with lifestyle choices, and to identify occupations that offer the requisite salaries.
1st: Look up actual homes for sale at utahrealestate.com. When you find the house you want, enter the full amount in the excel spreadsheet. This will automatically calculate your monthly payment. 2nd Go to the Reality check. Click "get started". Follow the instructions and when it asks for house payment, enter the money from your excel spreadsheet. You will find three occupations from the list that you will be interested in and that will support your lifestyle. |
CD #4 Non-traditional Careers
Students will define nontraditional careers, review UVU research on women and education trends in Utah and the decision-making process.
CD #6 Lifelong Learning
Students will learn why it is important to learn skill sets combined with education foundations. Lesson experiences are focused on accessing content from the Internet vs. developing skills sets that build on prior learning, and understanding the importance of practice as students pursue CTE and Career Pathways.
CDA #7 Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities to Support College and Career Success
Students will explore the set of knowledge, skills, and abilities they each can develop in order to successfully pursue college and career goals.
CD #8 The Relationship of Work Values to College and Careers
Students examining personal and work values, and exploring the impact of values on career choice.
CD #9 Identifying Career Interests
An introduction to common organizational schema used in matching career interests with occupations that support those interests.
CD #10 Connecting Interests to Career Pathways in STEM
Complete the scavenger hunt worksheet by selecting STEM careers from the two websites linked below that are new and interesting to you. Each row suggests a different education level: trade or certificate, associates degree, bachelors's degree, or graduate degree (master's or doctoral). An example is provided.
